Interceptor 006
Interceptor 006 is The Ocean Cleanup’s new concept to intercept plastic in Guatemala. It is currently being installed, and will be trialed end-May 2023. In 2022, The Ocean Cleanup made our [first attempt at stopping a tsunami](https://theoceancleanup.com/updates/the-ocean-cleanup-trials-new-interceptor-in-worlds-most-polluting-river/ "https://theoceancleanup.com/updates/the-ocean-cleanup-trials-new-interceptor-in-worlds-most-polluting-river/") of trash in the Rio Las Vacas, close to Guatemala City. The Rio Las Vacas is a tributary of the Rio Motagua, which flows into the Caribbean Sea. During Guatemala’s rainy season, flash floods wash down vast quantities of plastic and other waste from nearby Guatemala City and the surrounding area. This location presents **unique challenges** demanding a new Interceptor concept capable of extracting maximum waste while withstanding the force of the river during flash floods. We attempted to stop this flash flood with a specially-designed experimental deployment in this location – the Interceptor Trashfence, but it could not withstand the forces. Taking all the lessons learned, we went back to the drawing board and prepared for the second attempt. Now, we are ready for round two with the **Interceptor Barricade**. The Interceptor Barricade, known as Interceptor 006, is supported by our valued **partners and suppliers**. This is the first Interceptor of its kind and we have incorporated the learnings from 2022 into this experimental design – alongside capturing plastic we expect to learn and optimize our operation during the rainy season.
